For all of you new mamas out there that are unable to have a photographer at your birth or newborn photos done right now due to quarantine. Here are some tips for you to take great photos on your own with your phone or camera…

  • Take them during the day when there is lots of natural window light.
  • Turn off your flash and the hospital lights. Use only the natural light if possible.
  • Don’t shoot towards the window. Shoot with the window to your back or side. Be mindful not to block the light at the same time.
  • Position your babe facing the light coming through the window.
  • Angle yourself properly. Shoot slightly down, from above or the side of your baby. Try to avoid aiming up the baby’s nose.
  • Simplify your background with a soft blanket or something with texture.
  • Plan to take photos right after your baby has just eaten. You want them nice and sleepy. (Most newborns can’t focus their eyes on the camera and will look a little cross-eyed when awake in photos.)
  • Download the Lightroom app on your phone and edit your favorite images.

*Feel free to tag your expecting friends or share this post. Send me any questions or images you need help with editing. I’ve got some free time. ;p
